Texas residents applaud Trump's border and immigration orders

In early January, before Trump’s inauguration, I spent several days in Texas' Hidalgo and Starr counties along the US-Mexico border in the Rio Grande Valley.

Texas residents applaud Trump's border and immigration orders

Many locals shared their concerns about the challenges of living near the border, describing what they saw as the dangers of illegal immigration.

Today, I spoke to some of them again, and they expressed strong support for Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the border, his plans to deploy troops, and his proposal to label cartels as terrorist organizations.

David Porras, a rancher, farmer, and botanist from Rio Grande City, explained, “We know what’s happening down here—and now the tables have turned. You’ve got to control the border.” While acknowledging that immigration is vital to the U.S. economy, Porras emphasized the need for it to be done “the right way,” arguing that illegal migration fuels cartels’ illicit activities. “Trump’s headed in the right direction,” he said. “It’s got to be controlled.”

Another supporter, Demesio Guerrero, a naturalized citizen from Mexico and a resident of Hidalgo County, described Trump’s return as a “once-in-a-lifetime” moment for border residents. He’s very brave, Guerrero said in Spanish. In front of Biden, in front of the world, he promised to correct all the foolish mistakes made here. It’s remarkable.

Around 1,000 military personnel preparing to go to southern border - reports

Meanwhile, reports indicate that around 1,000 additional active-duty troops are preparing to deploy to the southern border. This follows Trump’s executive order authorizing the military to assist the Department of Homeland Security in achieving “complete operational control” of the border.

On Monday, Trump declared a national emergency, stating, America’s sovereignty is under attack. The declaration enables him to allocate additional funds to reinforce the border with Mexico.
